TOP Ten - The Closing Ceremonies

#1 - Samus Aran Removes Her Power Suit

The TOP Ten Memorable Moments has come full circle. I got the idea to do a TOP 10 when writing my 2-part article about Samus Aran back in April. I mentioned in that article that Samus revealing herself to be a woman surprised the world, and especially shocked my 8-year old mind. I stated it was my most memorable moment in gaming, and from that announcement this long summer project was born. I realize it’s anti-climactic, because the #1 moment was announced twice before the 4-month span of time it took to get back here, and so I’m not going to try and force any more depth or emotion on the subject of Samus. Instead I will quote my previous article for you, which was titled “My Relationship with Samus Aran.” I encourage you to read the full two-part article, if you haven’t.

The ending of Metroid is ranked #1 in most “Memorable Moments in Video Games” for me. That moment when Samus sheds the power suit and reveals for the entire world to see that she is actually a woman underneath was monumental for me. It isn’t really so much that Samus is a woman that’s important, but that I had been led to believe otherwise prior to her unveiling. In the wonderful world of 8-bit gaming, the only story you got was detailed to you in the manual itself and then you were left to your own devices to work out the plot as you progressed through the game. Most games only got a paragraph or two, but games like Legend of Zelda and Metroid got considerably more. Metroid got 8 pages of background story explaining in detail the rise of the Space Pirates and the Federation turning to their last resort, Samus Aran. I remember rushing to consult this story while keeping my eye on Samus on my TV in case she was about to do anything else equally mind blowing. Just as I had thought! It continuously refers to Samus as a man. What was Nintendo of America playing at here? Had they intentionally tried to deceive me or was this some horrible inattention to detail while translating from Japanese?

As a child, I thought it was so cool that Samus is “a girl.” It endeared her to me for reasons I couldn’t adequately express. I couldn’t articulate why it was cool in any other way than it surprised the hell out of me one fateful afternoon. I didn’t see then that it was so rare to be playing a woman rather than saving one from a castle and so the entire concept was stimulating to me. It was the first time I ever played a strong, independent female character.

Samus has always been a source of inspiration for me, and now I owe this whole project to her. It’s been a long run, and I learned a lot about myself exploring these memories. I remembered that Final Fantasy IV is what pushed me over the edge into writing and storytelling. I remembered that Final Fantasy VI is what hooked me on video game music. I came to realize fully just why Aerith’s death was so meaningful and upsetting even after all these years. Subconsciously, I must have known all this, but writing about it and bringing it out into the public has given me such a great insight on how I’ve processed video games over the years. It’s as if I can trace the impact they’ve directly played on my life, and see how they still shape me.

This journey of self-discovery has been fascinating for me. I hope many of my readers have taken the time to think on the moments of gaming in their lives that shape and define them, based on what they’ve read in the past several blogs. This is the end of this journey through memory lane for me, however. I’ve also learned that committing myself to an 11-week (which turned out to be 16-weeks due to vacations, writing breaks, and computer malfunctions) is a huge undertaking. I look forward to returning to your regularly scheduled musings and reviews of all things related to video games.

Week in Review - 8/3/2012

DS
Kotaro & Zoruark
I’m still pushing through Hideyoshi’s episode. I had spent a lot of time evolving Pokémon and their Warlords. All the while Kotaro and Nobunaga were dueling it out on the east coast. As a result of many triumphs over Nobunaga, Kotaro was incredibly difficult to defeat. I tried to lure his army into Terrera which is very easy to capture without battling head to head, but he would have none of it. Eventually, I took my newly evolved Yoshihiro with a fully evolved Conkeldurr to take down Kotaro’s monstrous Dark Pokémon. Now only Nobunaga remains and I push him back to Dragnor.

 PC
My military is over 9,000!
I’m fighting off the impulse to buy “Gods & Kings” for Civilization V. I want to get it when it goes on sale or the price lowers, but I want it pretty badly. The game now feels incomplete when I read about the tales of religious intrigue and espionage from other players. At any rate, I finally loaded up the (incomplete) game in an attempt to rule on high as Arabian sultan. It didn’t work out. I lost by score to the unbelievable Egyptian empire. At one point a military rating came out which placed me around 2000 and the Ottomans (my closest rivals, but allies) at 4000. Egypt was at 15,000. I’ve never seen anything like that before.

Shai, Nimla & Elden as White Mage
Final Fantasy XIV has been a lot of fun the last two weeks. I’ve been working really hard at getting all the new jobs unlocked. Completing those quests isn’t a small feat. Just yesterday, I joined (and later re-organized) a pick-up group into Dzemael Darkhold in order to get White Mage and Monk artifact armor. I’ve been plugging away at side-quests and camp achievements when I’m solo. Pretty soon, though, I’m going to need to set my sights higher. I need to defeat some pretty fierce bosses, and conquer some dungeons. The relic weapons loom beyond my reach as well.

Week in Review - 7/27/2012

3DS
Lightning with a Moogle
Progress in Theatrhythm remains slow and steady. I’ve been able to complete a handful of songs on Ultimate difficulty which is no easy task for me. Cecil, Zidane, Bartz and Shantotto are all Level 99 now. I’m going to work on leveling Rydia. I recently unlocked Minwu and Yuna. I’m really trying to get Prishe unlocked, but her Purple shards are far and few between at the moment. I think I need to reorganize my skills to be more efficient at killing bosses than I am currently.

I’m a big fan of the “Shin Megami Tensei” series that I’ve played. Honestly, I’ve only really ever gotten completely absorbed into Nocturne and Persona 3. I haven’t set aside time in my life to give the others the attention they deserve. I picked up Devil Survivor Overclocked with the 3DS and it’s not what I expected. I’m enjoying it, but I’m not absorbed like I was with Nocturne and Persona 3. I play it in small doses, because I find the action a little slow and awkward. Tactical game with turn based combat just seems awkward. I think it will grow on me.

 DS
I did get Kenshin his Mewtwo partner. Keiji ended his episode with Terakionn. I’ve started Hideyoshi’s chapter and solidified control of the rear end of Arceus – I mean, Ransei. Now I plan to just solidify my power and level up my Pokémon and hunt down some more perfect links for my current army. Now that I have control of a defensible position, I should be good to build up my forces indefinitely. I do need to get control of Shingen in order to evolve him, since I beat Kenshin’s episode a long while ago.

PC
Finishing up my Archer Quests
My computer died last November and the one I replaced it with couldn’t run Final Fantasy XIV. December, they changed a few things that really upset me so I wasn’t too broken up about leaving. I didn’t want to spend $200 for a new video card and a monthly subscription to play a game that was now upsetting to me, so I walked away. I thought I’d be back for Version 2.0 (A Realm Reborn) and when they announced their Legacy program, I felt I earned it and it was time to put my money where my mouth was. So far, I’m enjoying it, but I still lament those changes back in December.

I’ve never played an “Ys” game, but it seems like something I would enjoy. Two titles went on sale during the Steam Summer Sale, so I picked them up for a good price. I popped on Ys Origin to see what kind of game it really was and if I’d enjoy it. I didn’t get too far, but it seemed like a faster paced Zelda-style game with a more comprehensive story. I’m not sure if all the ”Ys” games are like this, but I think I could really get into Ys Origin, but first I want to head back to Recettear and finish what I started there.

 Playstation 3
I do like the linking in battle.
I was interested in Recordof Agarest War when it came out, but I passed it up for a while. Then when Zero launched (and was a prequel story) I decided to buy it and play it. That was sometime last year and I was not really entertained. I saw it on the shelf this week and decided to pop it in and give it another chance. I’m surprised to find out I’m really enjoying it. I’m not sure what turned me off to it previously, but I’m having a great time with the battle system (which I found awkward and clunky before.
